Salami and Charcuterie workshop,
Sunday 24th November 2013, New Inn, Newbridge on Wye

The Association plans to host a Salami Workshop run by an external expert
(Mark Frederick) on Sunday 24th November.  Cost will be £20 per person payable in advance and spaces are limited to a total of 12 so that you can gain hands on experience.  If you would like more information on

Artificial Insemination & Pig Breeding Workshop,

Bob Stevenson as many of you will know is an expert in all maladies, treatments
and interventions related to pigs.  He has very kindly agreed to run a
workshop next Sunday at the New Inn, Newbridge on Wye primarily focusing on
artificial insemination and pig breeding, but he will also be running a general
question and answer session so please bring along your photos, videos and
questions for any pig health related issues.

Cost is £5 for association members payable on the day.  Lunch is also
available at extra cost (approximately £5).  Please confirm your

Native Breeds: new service for small producers

A note from Graham Waddington at Native Breeds:

Over the last year we have had a huge number of enquiries from smallholders and pig keepers wanting their pigs cured or processed. Whilst we have been able to fulfil a few orders we have not had the room or logistics to really fulfil a proper private processing service. So we are having a new room built and some expansions made in our unit; and will be able to offer the service attached. If you think this would be of you, we are able to take some orders from mid November but can start full scale in January.

Hywel Price (Tel: 07500 304722) has asked if we can advertise some of his pig equipment available for sale and if not sold before it will be in his farm clearance sale on Wednesday 9 October at 2 pm.   Among other bits and pieces there are numerous troughs and hoppers, automatic pig drinkers, pig weighing machine (not sheep), slapper marker sets, pig rings and variouis tools such as feet trimmers, etc.

At last the weather is like it should be in the Summer!

I can’t believe the Royal Welsh has come round again so quickly; let’s hope the weather stays good.

Help is needed on the stand again, any member wishing to help for a few hours, please contact either Keith Brown, myself or Barbara Warren, and let us know when you can come. You will be sent a ticket to get in the post.

The Smallholders show was a fantastic success, and congratulations go to all members who won a prize. Barbara then went up to Great Yorkshire to the junior pig of the year.  Thanks goes to everyone who helped, and especially to Barbara who did the gardens. We had a good evening at the New Inn, with Graham as quiz master, and the prizes kindly donated by Andy.

ASSOCIATION DINNER & QUIZ, New Inn, Newbridge on Wye, Saturday 18th May, 6.30pm

The Association will also be hosting a dinner & quiz on the Saturday night of the Spring Festival at the New Inn, Newbridge on Wye.  Tickets cost £10 each
per person and include a main course, pudding and entry into the quiz (with
prizes for the winners!).  All including non-members are most welcome but please contact me as soon as possible to book your tickets (andy.zambanini@btconnect.com or 07944 611053) so that we can organise the catering properly and not waste your Association’s funds!


We all know how much pigs love a garden! Given a chance (when we are out shopping), they move through it like a single-furrow plough, through the strawberry bed, herb border, lawn, strawberry patch.

Solution –plant in wheelbarrows, above snout level. That is our theme for the Gardeners Corner display area this year, along with a couple of orchard trees. So on the Sunday afternoon we shall have 6 shiny and wheelbarrows seeking new homes, already planted with flowers, herbs, vegetables, strawberries and more. Prices will vary according to planting, but we shall be open to offers around £40.
(Note the price of an empty wheelbarrow in a garden centre – usually £60).

Spring Festival 18th/19th May

A big thank you to the pig breeders especially those who have entries in the show, entries this year are up by an impressive 53%, and in case you are wondering that’s not a misprint, just over half as many again as in 2012.  Last year we had 27 exhibitors showing their pigs, this year we have 41 so the exhibitors are up 50% as well.

In 2012 a series of talks was started in the sheep section and this year it has been
taken up by the pig section as well. It’s part of the “getting started” programme aimed at all levels of experience in stockmanship, but in particular new starters with pigs. The talks by experts in their field will hopefully take place behind the W&BCPBA marquee with its own lighting, PA system etc. depending on the eventual pen layout.

The programme has been well advertised and you should have had a flyer about it by now so if you have any questions regarding feeding, health etc. now is a good time to ask and have it explained to you.

Our featured themed exhibit this year (if we have the space for it ) is the same as one of the lectures,“Pigs in Woods”. It involves creating a wooded clearing with the tops of trees from the forestry and two or three loads of well-rotted

Finally once again we are asking for help running the marquee, talking about pigs, dealing with enquiries, merchandise stand, tea making (very important), and just tidying up in general. This is always a problem as most of us are working and exhibiting pigs so we do need help.

Pigs & Woodland Management Workshop: Sunday March 17th 2013

This is going to be an excellent workshop led by Ray Harris who as many of you will know, is the go-to-man for all aspects of woodland management and regeneration as proven by his frequent appearances on Countryfile and other countryside related TV programs.  There are only 4 places left, so contact Andy (Secretary) as soon as possible to book your place (07944 611053 or andy.zambanini@btconnect.com).

Location:  Newport Almeley House, Herefordshire, HR3 6LL. There will be
both indoor and outdoor aspects to this workshop so please bring suitable
clothing and footwear for both sessions.

Start Time: 11am – meet in the reception area

Cost : £20 for Association members payable on the day. This is slightly higher than the usual fee as we will be giving a donation to the gardening charity associated with the venue.

Please bring a packed lunch!
